What's in a Name?

Today marks the beginning of my third trimester. (Can you believe I only have 12 weeks to go?!?!?) As I'm sure you can all imagine the two most common questions we've been asked are "What are you having?" and "Do you have a name picked out?" The answers would be "We aren't finding out" and "We haven't really discussed it". When Carter was born, we spent quite a bit of time mulling it over with each other and took a list to the hospital that had all the names we agreed on. Five girls' names and two boys' names. It's a good thing we didn't have a girl, because now as I look back at those five names, I don't like any of them. It's also a good thing we didn't name Carter Dalton ("I thought you'd be bigger..." Roadhouse, Patrick Swayze, Sam Elliot... Remember?) because there are a good handful of those in our school district.

If I remember correctly, we got out the book of 50,001 baby names and just started flipping through the pages for girls names. Jeremy had always wanted his first son to be named Dalton Lee. He didn't change his mind really until Carter was born and we were into the second day at the hospital. Something about that name just didn't feel right to him and boy am I thankful for that!! He doesn't look like a Dalton, does he?

Jeremy and I don't really have a system for choosing baby names. It mostly comes down to me coming up with a list and he crosses through most of them, leaving only one or two that he likes, but still probably doesn't love. A new issue for us with this baby (depending on the gender) is the middle name. Carter has Jeremy's middle name and if it's a girl, she'll have mine. But what if it's a boy? (I know most of you don't think there's a chance on earth, but it's still a possibility!!) Do we go for something completely random that we like? Do we try to come up with a meaningful family name that we like? (Jeremy's grandfathers were named Gaylord & Bernard.)

We have for the most part agreed on a boy's first name, but that could change depending on what we decide for the middle name. Girls' names don't seem to be as big of an issue. We can find more of those that we like. We haven't found that one, but we've narrowed it down to about 3.

So if you feel so inclined, I would love to hear favorite or possible names as well as any reasonings or methods you used in naming your own children. We are always up for suggestions!! There will definitely be some public recognition (and maybe a little something extra) if we happen to love and choose a name you suggested - with your permission of course. I would never want to steal the name of your next child... :)

ok, no Dakota or Sierra :) or Neveah (heaven backwards)-those are my least favorites, oh, and anything on the top 25 list for the past 5 years :) just kidding about the last one! Go to www.nymbler.com and you can put in names you like, then it generates names that are similar. Oh and no nicknames, like don't name him Andrew if you are just gonna call him Drew, etc. You asked. . . . :)

Whew - Good thing none of those names were on our list. :) My name is a nickname, so I'm sure on that one.
