Pretty Cow

In the club calf business, you have to make the cows pretty.  The heifer in this picture is not being harmed,  I promise - she is getting a shampoo and a blow dry!

If you are trying to halter-break a calf, this is the best way to do it.  Halter-tie them in the wash rack and give her a good scrub down.  Then, to make them look pretty, you need to blow dry them.  This is done with a kind of reverse vacuum cleaner...  I'll try to get a better picture of that.

Here is Carter just before he walked right through a big pile of... well, you know, and had to get his shoes "shampooed".

This is one of the most coolest-ever-invented rooms on the ranch.  This is the Cool Room.   I know its empty right now, but when the weather gets hot, the place will be buzzing, scratch that, mooing with cows!  When you have a calf you are taking to a fair or a show, you want it to look big.  Translation:  fluffy!  The blowers that line the top of this room are giant air conditioners. During the summer months, this room stays between 42 and 47 degrees.  This cool temperature encourages fluffy hair, even in July!  How cool is that?

Since it's still cool enough outside now, the cows get to roam freely about in the runs - the long narrow pens set up next to the barn.  Aren't they pretty?

I'm still working on catching a C-Section in action, for those of you who are interested... you know who you are!!
